DeFi
Lending, trading and yield protocols that run on smart contracts rather than through an intermediary.
What it is
Decentralized finance: lending, trading, stablecoins and yield run by smart contracts instead of a bank, broker or exchange.
What they share
Users keep their own funds and deal with code rather than a company, and almost every token here governs a protocol: holders vote on its parameters, and on some of them share in the fees it earns.
What separates them
This is the broadest category on the site; it is several businesses under one name.
- Exchanges for spot trading (Uniswap, Curve, PancakeSwap) and perpetual futures (Hyperliquid).
- Lending markets (Aave, Morpho).
- Stablecoin and synthetic-dollar issuers (Sky, formerly Maker; Ethena).
- Yield and rate trading (Pendle) and liquid restaking (Ether.fi).
- Oracles, which feed prices to all of the above (Chainlink, Pyth).
- Tokenized real-world assets (Ondo).
The biggest difference between DeFi tokens is whether the protocol's revenue reaches token holders, through buybacks, burns or fee sharing, or the token only carries a vote.
