Altcoin Season Index

Is it altcoin season?

No.

62% of the top 50 altcoins beat Bitcoin over the last 90 days. The standard rule calls it altcoin season at 75% or more. Bitcoin itself returned +25.0% over the same 90 days.

Over the last 30 days, 50% beat Bitcoin (+6.4%). Shorter windows swing more and are not the rule.

Altcoin Season Index history since 2017

2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 0 25 50 75 100 75: altcoin season 25: Bitcoin season weekly | daily

Weekly, 2017 to 11 Jan 2026: each week's own top 50, 13-week returns. Daily from 13 Jan 2026: today's top 50, 90-day returns, as the live number. The dashed line marks where the two join.

How the index is measured

The 50 largest coins on our board by today's market cap, excluding Bitcoin and stablecoins; each one's 90-day price change against Bitcoin's; the index is the share that beat it. Ranking by today's market cap is how the public indices do it. Past days on the daily line are measured exactly as today, with today's basket, which is also how the public indices draw their history; a past day's own top 50 could differ. A day with fewer than 30 coins with prices is left off the line, not counted as zero.

The weekly history is different on purpose: each week uses that week's 50 largest coins (a point-in-time basket, so coins that later faded or vanished still count where they were large), with stablecoins, pegged, wrapped and staked tokens left out, and 13-week (91-day) returns against Bitcoin's. A coin with no price 13 weeks earlier is left out of that week. Source: CoinMarketCap's weekly historical listings (1,000 coins deep). Because the two baskets differ, the lines can disagree by several points where they meet.

Our article also asks whether alt market cap actually rose, which separates a real season from alts merely falling less than Bitcoin. Read the full analysis.

Alt breadth

Get an alert when breadth crosses 70% Free account, by email. Also tells you when the distribution warning goes active.

Share of the 35 largest altcoins in an uptrend on the daily chart (above their 50-day average, with the average rising).

Late-cycle distribution warning: not active

This is a registered forward signal, not a measured claim. It fired before two of the last three Bitcoin tops (2021 and 2025, not 2017), in a window of weeks to months rather than on a date, and the conditions that filter out its false fires were found on those same two cases. We fixed the rule in advance and the current cycle is its test.

It counts only when breadth reaches 70% on two days in a row (after first spending 30 days below 50%) and all three of these hold that day:

Breadth last reached 70% on two days in a row on 2026-08-26, with the Bitcoin conditions not met, so it did not count. It re-arms after 30 days below 50%. Past days use today's 35 coins (the research re-formed the basket daily), so a historical date can differ by a day. Not a buy or sell signal. More on breadth.

Altcoin Season Index FAQ

What is the Altcoin Season Index?

A number from 0 to 100: the share of the 50 largest altcoins that did better than Bitcoin over the last 90 days. At 80, four in five of them beat Bitcoin; at 20, one in five did. It measures how many altcoins are ahead of Bitcoin, not how far prices moved.

How is the Altcoin Season Index calculated?

We take the 50 largest coins on our board by today's market cap, leave out Bitcoin and stablecoins, and compare each coin's 90-day price change with Bitcoin's 90-day price change. The index is the percentage that came out ahead. A coin without 90 days of prices is left out, and the page says how many were counted.

What counts as altcoin season, and what is Bitcoin season?

By the standard rule, it is altcoin season at 75 or above: at least three in four of the top 50 altcoins beat Bitcoin over 90 days. It is Bitcoin season at 25 or below. In between, the index leans one way or the other; at 50, half of them beat Bitcoin.

How often does the index update?

The live number is recomputed every 30 minutes from the daily closing prices we already hold for the board, and the daily part of the chart with it. The weekly history before that is a fixed file that we rebuild from our historical listings.

Why does this number differ from other sites?

Small choices move it by a few points: which coins count as altcoins (we leave out stablecoins; some sites also drop wrapped, staked or exchange tokens), where the prices come from and what time of day counts as the close, and how the basket is chosen. Ranking the basket by today's market cap, as we and the public indices do, counts the coins that are large now; ranking by market cap at the start of the 90 days instead can move the number by about 12 points.

Does altcoin season mean prices are going up?

No. The index only compares altcoins with Bitcoin. If Bitcoin falls 30% and most altcoins fall 20%, the index can read altcoin season while nearly everything lost money. Our analysis of what an altcoin season is, including whether altcoin market cap actually rose, is in Is it altcoin season?

What are the alt breadth card and the distribution warning?

Alt breadth is a separate measure: the share of the largest altcoins in an uptrend on the daily chart (above their 50-day average, with the average rising). The late-cycle distribution warning built on it is a registered forward signal, not a measured claim: its rule was fixed in advance and the current cycle is its test. Neither is a buy or sell signal.

Not investment advice. The index describes the market; it is not a buy or sell signal.
